THE METHOD

Scent Identity Design

A method for designing identity through scent.

Seven stages connect research, interpretation and implementation. Each stage clarifies a question and prepares the next, keeping the work connected to the identity it aims to express.

01ListeningUnderstanding identity

Gather stories, values, expectations and constraints. Interviews and observation of places establish a shared starting point.

Outcome. An initial brief and a map of needs.

02AttunementRecognising the codes

Connect visual languages, materials, gestures and sensory references. Identify relationships that are relevant to the brand and its context.

Outcome. References and initial sensory guidelines.

03VisionSetting a direction

Give the emerging ideas a clear focus. The concept sets out what the fragrance should express and where people will encounter it.

Outcome. A creative concept and a guiding narrative.

04CreationDeveloping the fragrance

Translate the concept into an olfactory brief. Compare prototypes, gather feedback and refine the composition with the professionals involved.

Outcome. A fragrance consistent with the design direction.

05MaterialisationFinding a presence

Consider objects, materials, packaging and spaces. Each application calls for decisions about form, proportion and use.

Outcome. A coordinated set of applications.

06ActivationBecoming an experience

Prepare the encounter with the audience. Communication, staff training and use across different points of contact are part of the project.

Outcome. An active, understandable olfactory experience.

07ResonanceListening over time

Gather feedback, review consistency of use and adapt applications. Evaluate the experience against its context and original aims.

Outcome. Guidance for sustaining and developing the olfactory identity.
